Rajeev Sethi is India’s foremost scenographer and the founder of Rajeev Sethi Scenographers Pvt Ltd, the country’s first dedicated scenographic practice.
For more than five decades he has worked at the intersection of architecture, the visual and performing arts, craft, design innovation, festivals and cultural policy, turning spaces into narratives and livelihoods into living culture.
Long before words like “immersive” and “experiential” became fashionable, Rajeev Sethi was already building environments where architecture, craft and performance spoke to each other. From the seminal “Golden Eye” exhibition in New York, to “Aditi: A Celebration of Life” and the Silk Route Festival in Washington, to the pathbreaking Festival of India and Apna Utsav in the 1980s, Terminal 2 at Mumbai’s international airport and Expo 2000, his work has repeatedly reframed how India sees itself and how the world encounters India.
He has earned numerous awards for his service, including the Sanskriti Award for outstanding social and cultural achievement, the Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany, INTACH’s first Indira Gandhi Lifetime Achievement Award, the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres and, most recently, the AD x JSW Lifetime Achievement Award.
