It is the langar that feeds anyone who arrives, the Phulkari folded in a grandmother’s trunk, the poetry recited from memory and the courage to begin again, anywhere in the world.
A culture that travels
Few cultures have travelled as far, or as confidently. Panjabi music fills the charts; Panjabi kitchens feed cities from Toronto to Melbourne; Panjabi families have made homes on every continent. Yet the fuller picture — the literature, the crafts, the visual arts, the old games and the quiet rituals of hospitality — is rarely seen together, in one place.
Panjabiyat is not nostalgia. It is a living way of being that keeps renewing itself.
Why a festival
Saaj exists to gather that picture whole. Over three days in Patiala, six worlds — Sahit, Raunak, Funkaar, Swaad, Roop and Sehat — bring the literary arts, stage and screen, craft and design, culinary arts, visual arts and the old games under one sky. The aim is simple: to honour the masters, open the door to the next generation, and show the world what Panjab has always known about itself.
Rooted, and reimagined
Saaj keeps the ethnic fabric intact while inviting contemporary voices into the conversation. A qissa may be told under a tree and then reinterpreted on a stage; a Phulkari motif may appear on a centuries-old shawl and on a couture gown. That conversation between old and new is Panjabiyat at its most alive.
